Out of here – Inscriptions of people in police custody and immigration detention in Klapperfeld prison – 1955–2002

On the second floor of the former police custody and deportation prison on Klapperfeldstraße in Frankfurt am Main there are 16 single cells and 2 collective cells, in which mostly deportation prisoners were imprisoned in the last decades of the prison's use until it was closed in 2002. Inscriptions in more than 30 languages can be found on doors, walls, tables and chairs, which the inmates left here over a total of five decades. Since the beginning of 2013, these have been translated by numerous helpers.

The permanent exhibition »Out of here – Inscriptions of people in police custody and immigration detention in Klapperfeld prison – 1955–2002« was opened in 2015. For each cell there is a ring-bound brochure with the inscriptions translated by a team of volunteers with which the visitors can independently explore the cells. These brochures contain a total of well over 1,000 translations. Display boards in English and German provide background information on the deportation custody. A 6-page leaflet was also created to advertise the exhibition.
